September at The Winchester Hotel and Spa

Events & culture
This September sees Winchester begin to pivot towards autumn. It is a great time to visit, with the summer time crowds ebbing away and the classic spots, such as the Cathedral, easier to visit. Here’s a look at a few things that are going on in and around Winchester this month.
In the centre of the city you will find an array of fresh local produce from Hampshire at the Winchester Farmers Market. It’s a great place to pick up some foodie gifts, or snacks for a day out in Winchester. Named in 2023 as one of the top 20 best farmer’s markets in the UK, this award-winning market sees 30 to 40 stalls in attendance. Showcasing the best of what Hampshire has to offer, all stallholders are the producers, and you will find some exceptional produce and artisanal treats. This month, the market takes place on the 10th & 24th, and you can find further information HERE
This month at The Arc in Winchester there’s an exhibition of some work by Georgia O’Keeffe (1887 – 1986), one of the most important American artists of 20th-century. O’Keeffe balanced abstraction with a more figurative approach and though best known as a painter, drawing was central to her artistic practice. The 21 drawings featured in this exhibition were made between 1915 and 1963, spanning the period when O’Keeffe established herself as a major figure in American Modernism. With no artworks by O’Keeffe held in UK public collections, this exhibition is a rare chance to see her work in person outside the US.
“Georgia O’Keeffe’s iconic works of organic forms – including flowers and bones – surreal abstractions, rural landscapes and urban cityscapes uniquely captured the experience of her environment and broke new ground for women artists.” - The Arc
The exhibition runs until15th of November during The Arc opening times. Further information can be found HERE
September sees the return of Winchester Heritage Open Days, which gives the public the opportunity to visit historic building in the area which are not usually open for general admission. Uppark House and Gardens is one such example. This stunning 17th century house with a cafe serving hot food, drinks, cakes and snacks, also features a Secondhand Bookshop, and a beautiful garden which is gradually being restored to its original 19th century design with woodland, a wide glade and a meadow. Open until 17th September, you’ll find further details HERE
A little further afield, but well worth the visit, Buckler's Hard on the Beaulieu Estate is steeped in history. From its beginnings in the 13th century under the ownership of the Cistercian monks, to its time as a shipyard building boats for Nelson’s Navy, it is a fascinating historic maritime village, nestled on the edge of the Beaulieu River in the New Forest. Explore the museum and learn about the village’s shipbuilding history, smuggling secrets, wartime stories and more. Plus, discover how the village has transformed into the tranquil haven that stands today. Discover more and plan your visit HERE
We would also suggest planning ahead for Christmas, if you are thinking of joining us at The Winchester Hotel & Spa this coming winter. Winchester is often known as ‘England’s Christmas Capital’, and the 2023 festive season starts on 16 November with the Christmas lights switch on. Winchester Cathedral’s famous Christmas Market is recognised as one of the best in Europe, and this year it runs from Friday 17 November through until Thursday 21 December. A couple of dates for your diary there.
